Yardzen is an online landscape design platform that pairs homeowners with landscape designers and horticulturalists to deliver custom yard designs, using a simple online process. Beyond providing virtual landscape design, Yardzen also partners with contractors (in selected areas), who can assist in executing the design.
First, choose your design package. Next, use Yardzen’s Yard Builder software to upload photos and videos and share key project details, like budget, vision, and design elements. Then, share your style and plant preferences using a selection of materials, furniture, plants and groundcovers curated for your climate, home and lifestyle. After all details are submitted, you will be matched with a design team, which includes a landscape designer and a horticulturalist. These professionals will create a custom plan for your yard. You will have the opportunity to share feedback after receiving your plan. Once the design is complete, Yardzen will provide CAD plans, which your contractor can use to install your design. You can work with your own contractor, install the design yourself, or request a recommendation through Yardzen’s Pro Network.

What Makes Yardzen Different?
Unlike some online landscape design companies, Yardzen provides hardscaping (concretes, bricks, stone, fences, etc.) as well as landscaping (living shrubs, trees, vegetation) design. The company also goes beyond simply providing landscape design plans, by matching customers to approved contractors in its Yardzen Pro Network.
All Yardzen designs include low-water plants and attractors that promote wildlife corridors.
Yardzen Pro Network
If you need assistance executing your yard design, the Yardzen Pro Network makes it easier to find contractors.
Leading Brand Partners
Yardzen partners with brands like CB2 and Crate & Barrel. This makes it easier to find and purchase outdoor furniture, accents, and other materials needed for your yard design.
In Business Since
We did not find a formation date listed on Yardzen’s website. The company’s Better Business Bureau account was opened in August of 2020, which means it has been around at least that long.
Yardzen's Reviews and Reputation
Online landscape design is a relatively new field, and Yardzen was founded pretty recently—so we didn’t find a lot of Yardzen reviews at the time of this review writing. It’s not listed on TrustPilot, and doesn’t have any Google reviews yet. While Yardzen is registered with the Better Business Bureau website, there were no reviews or complaints at the time of this writing. However, we were able to find a handful of Yardzen reviews online, on the company’s website, and at Houzz.com.
“In a matter of a few months, our stark cement patio and back deck became a dreamy urban oasis, complete with landscaping, potted plants, rugs, pillows, and styling elements.”
- Shira G.
“The revisions on the front yard design literally took my breath away when I saw them! Absolutely beautiful. The simple act of driving up to the house is going to make us happy.”
- Golnaz A.
“Our experience using Yardzen was an absolute dream. The uploading process is user friendly, we easily left feedback and our designs are gorgeous. We are so excited to break ground on our new backyard project.”
- Lauren C.
“We just received our revised (i.e. second) set of designs from Yardzen and unfortunately have not been happy with our experience. A lot has been said here so I’ll spare the long details, but I would only recommend them to someone if you have a VERY simple space (i.e. flat ground, no elements to work around) and don't have a strong opinion on style or design.”
- Anna S.
“We just received our first whole house design draft. Disappointing for sure. Felt that our inspiration looks weren’t even incorporated. There were lots of plant color choices we didn't agree with, nor did we feel they matched w/ the design in the inspiration photos. Paying an additional $200-$300 for each further iteration seems to null the cost and time savings that were supposed to give Yardzen a competitive edge. I'm starting to see why walking the property, back-and-forth discussions, and getting a sense of the neighborhood are invaluable traits when designing landscape plans.”
“I didn't like our experience at all. When I requested flowers and plants that were non-toxic since I have 2 young kids that like to put everything in their mouths, their response was we have kids and teach them not to do that. Great, me too but sometimes, my efforts fail me and I really don't want to rush any of them to hospital for playing in the backyard without me. Finally, the number of edits were unclear and not nearly enough, the designs weren’t too creative for our space (we bought the largest package) and the renderings weren’t saved to our profile so we couldn't view the changes. We got 3 pieces of paper for almost $1500 and when we got plant and flower suggestions that were non-toxic, they told us to buy 32 Star Jasmine for our backyard. Wow, that was super helpful. So basically, it was a worthless and pointless purchase.”

Yardzen has been profiled in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, and Sunset.
Yardzen provides more comprehensive online landscape design services than many competitors, and has endorsements from quite a few major publishers. Its partnerships with home furnishings retailers and contractors make it an attractive choice for homeowners who would like a more streamlined approach to online landscape design. While we did find a few negative Yardzen reviews, these were balanced by positive reviews. Based on pricing, services provided and overall online reputation, it looks like Yardzen is a good choice.
